Subject: tough love for small audiences

Big audiences are cool.

When you have a big audience, you’ve got more options and more leverage.

You also have more flexibility and “margin for error.” 

Maybe your offer is a little weak on the messaging front…but it’s okay, because it doesn’t have to land with everyone. You just need it to resonate with 1% of your community.

But what if you DON’T have a big audience?

Well, that’s okay too.

But you have to be aware of how the “business math” changes.

You can’t expect to pay the bills with a low-ticket membership (or low-ticket anything) as your main offer — because you’d need hundreds of members and you don’t have the audience to make that possible.

You can’t float along with vague offers or an “I kinda can help everyone” niche — because you need super sharp messaging in order to make the most of the small community you have.

You can’t spend 50% of your time testing tech platforms, making graphics for your checkout page, or re-recording the 7th module of your yet-to-be-launched course — because not enough people are seeing those things to make that time worth it. 

My second year in online business, I made 3x what I made as a waitress-slash-tutor (my previous career).

And I had a tiny audience.

200 people in a FB group and 350 people on my email list.

But I was focusing my energy where it counted:

Super simple & super premium offers, so people could easily pay me lots more money after coming to one of my workshops.

Super specific offers so my small audience could instantly say “that’s for me” or “that’s not for me.”

Less than 3 hours a week spent on tech, admin, funnels, software, graphics, or making my offers fancier — all my hours went to building relationships, reaching more people, putting out actual offers, and serving my small crew of clients.

You can make a business work with a really small audience.

But you’ve gotta be intentional, ‘cause you’ve got a lot less “wiggle room.”

So how the heck do I do it as an introvert?!

(the “why” is pretty clear — it’s how we fill up our premium offer without ever launching, so that makes it wayyy worth it)

How I do live workshops as an introvert:

#1 — The right Zoom format

We do Zoom webinars instead of Zoom meetings for our workshops. This means we can’t see or hear any of the attendees, and they can only engage via the chat.

This might seem like a small tweak, but for me it makes a massive difference.

#2 — The right workshop style

I love teaching! So we do very training-focused workshops with slides, frameworks, etc.

This is 10x more manageable for me than a workshop that includes facilitation, hot seat coaching, live face-to-face coaching, etc.

If those are your zones of genius, go for it! But for me, staying in teaching mode is a better fit.

#3 — The right rhythm

Our workshops would probably feel tiring if I was also balancing a jam-packed calendar of other live calls.

But I’m not! We do two calls a week for our clients. And a couple times a month, we do a guest training for an affiliate or a bonus call for one of our private clients. That’s it! 

Since my calendar has tons of white space, I’m able to look forward to our live workshops instead of dreading them.
